I approach photography with two goals, both somewhat different from
one another. I apply each separately depending on which element I
am focusing on at the time.
Scenic landscape photography is the field that I have chosen to make
a living. It allows me to combine two interests that I enjoy,
photography and exploring the outdoors. My intent is to record scenes
that either remain unaffected by man's presence or remain in harmony with
it.
Photomontage is an area of fine art photography where I purposefully
create an image that makes a statement. The effect may strictly provoke
a visual reaction or express my view on a political or social issure.
I create a graphic portrayal of my thoughts on the world condition.
These areas of photographic imagery allow me to interpret what I wish
to convey in different formats that stand apart from one another.
Scenic photography is meant to portray what is beautiful environmentally
and photomontage creates a stage that is meant to provoke. As different
as these two mediums are from one another they are alike in that they each
present how I envision what I view around me.
Initially I wished to pursue a career in art. My interest in
drawing and painting eventually merged with another love, photography.
At first using a camera was a more instantaneous approach to creating an
image. Eventually though I was able to combine both interests when
I began creating pieces through photomontage.
My photographs have been published nationally in a wide variety of
publications, and in book form in several compilations of "The
Year's Best In Photography". I also teach color printing at Photographic
Center School in Seattle, Washington.
